In observation of Fire Prevention Week it's important to take the time to educate yourself about your smoke alarms and fire safety plan. According to the National Fire Protection Association & United States Fire Administration, Fifteen of every 16 homes have a smoke alarm but only 3/4 of those homes have working smoke alarms. You should place a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on each level of the home. Smoke alarms should be tested once a month and batteries should be changed every spring and fall.
Also celebrated every year on October 1st is a day that is designated to recognize canine firefighters! Traditionally, Dalmatians were used to follow the horse drawn carriages making way for the fire equipment and keeping bystanders from getting too close. Today, they are used as a symbol and mascot for our fire stations. Dalmatians are also famous for demonstrations for our children learning "stop, drop, and roll."
